Embracing more sustainable mobility

Tools and methods for moving around without harming the environment

Mobility is a key factor when it comes to the ecological impact of tourism. Greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and congestion all mean that transport plays a significant part in the travel industry’s environmental balance sheet. Destinations with high tourism density or fragile ecosystems – such as islands, protected areas and historic centres – are particularly susceptible to intense, largely unsustainable flows.

Consequently, there is a pressing need to rethink the approach to transport for tourists and adopt sustainable mobility models that reduce environmental impact without compromising the travel experience. The SMARTIES for SMEs European project plays a part on this front by supporting small and medium enterprises in the industry during digitalisation and the pursuit of sustainability, promoting integrated solutions in various fields, including mobility. The goal is to develop strategies that harness local resources and encourage greener, more accessible travel.

Sustainable mobility solutions

There are numerous alternatives to transport with a high environmental impact. They can already be found in many tourist destinations, ready for better integration in local systems. Public transport – such as electric buses, trams and underground trains – can reduce congestion and emissions per passenger. Regional and national trains are an efficient choice for medium- and long-distance travel, causing less pollution. For short trips, electric scooters and bicycles promote slow, active and sustainable tourism. On islands and the coast, switching to electric ferries and low-impact ships is a useful way to reduce marine and noise pollution. Another way to optimise travel and reduce emissions is through sharing solutions such as car sharing and carpooling. Finally, pedestrian routes and paths champion cultural and nature trails, promoting greater awareness among visitors to areas.

These solutions provide tourism SMEs with concrete opportunities to diversify, strengthen their ties to the territory and attract sustainability-oriented travellers.

Increasingly digital solutions

Digitalisation plays a key role in the spread of more sustainable mobility models. Smartphone apps make it simple to organise multimodal itineraries, book tickets, share vehicles and hire light vehicles, improving accessibility and the use of services for travellers.

SMARTIES for SMEs works alongside tourism SMEs as they adopt digital solutions, supporting the integration of smart technologies in their services. The goal is to enhance the tourism experience, encourage responsible behaviour and optimise flows, thanks to data collection and analysis. The approach boosts the sustainability and competitiveness of local destinations.
