Biodiversity and technology: the secret to success

Digital technology helps SMEs to protect biodiversity and reduce environmental impact

Biodiversity – i.e. the variety of all life forms on Earth – is a part of our natural heritage that makes a key contribution to balance on our planet. Every species, no matter how small, plays an essential role in maintaining ecosystems: from water purification and soil fertility to climate regulation and crop pollination.

However, these treasures are now under serious threat. Species and habitats are disappearing at an ever-faster rate due to urban expansion, intensive agriculture, pollution and climate change, with potentially irreversible consequences for human and environmental well-being.

Monitoring and taking action

As part of the twin transition promoted by the Smarties for SMEs project, many small and medium enterprises are discovering how digital technologies can provide concrete support in the protection of biodiversity. Simple, accessible solutions can really make a difference, for both businesses and the ecosystem. Cutting-edge environmental sensors can be used for real-time monitoring of parameters such as soil moisture or air and water quality, which are essential for those adopting more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural methods. IoT (Internet of Things) systems facilitate continuous collection and analysis of environmental data, enabling prompt, targeted intervention. Digital mapping tools – which can be based on Geographic Information Systems (GISs) or open-source satellite images – enable SMEs to gain in-depth knowledge of the territories where they operate, identify areas at risk and plan effective conservation measures. Sustainable traceability platforms – which often harness blockchain technology – ensure transparency in production chains and help to champion products with a low environmental impact and more conscious consumption. In addition, smart waste management systems reduce pollution and support the circular economy, while energy optimisation software helps to limit waste and increase the use of renewable energy.

Finally, citizen science apps and platforms actively involve local communities in biodiversity monitoring, creating a direct link between businesses, citizens and the environment. Thanks to these technologies, even the smallest organisations can effectively manage and reduce their environmental impacts, making innovation into a driver for sustainability.

Making a challenge into an opportunity

The SMARTIES for SMEs project accompanies and supports small and medium enterprises during the twin green and digital transition. As well as improving production processes, it also aims to have a positive impact on biodiversity and the quality of the landscape.

By reducing consumption of resources such as water and energy, preventing waste and conducting more detailed monitoring of territories, businesses can actively contribute to the conservation of natural habitats and the protection of local species.

In addition, combining technology and nature paves the way to more responsible and regenerative development of tourism, bringing out the best of places and strengthening the bond between businesses, communities and the environment.

All of this helps to ensure the twin transition is not only an economic challenge, but also a concrete opportunity to make areas more resilient, inclusive and sustainable in the long term.
